Disney Deals With Casting Backlash For The New Aladdin Movie

Disney Deals With Casting Backlash For The New Aladdin Movie

If you've been on the edge of your seat since the moment you realized Disney was beginning to remake a plethora of their animated classics as live-action movies then you're probably aware that Beauty and the Beast was just the tip of the iceberg and the next major motion picture we get to enjoy in all its magical glory is Aladdin. However, the movie hasn't even begun shooting yet and is already dealing with controversy at every turn, especially when it comes to their casting woes and selections!

Just 4 days prior to announcing Mena Massoud would play the role of Aladdin Twitter was ablaze making suggestions to Disney who reportedly was having a hard time casting the iconic street rat Prince. Now up to the plate is controversy surrounding their decision to cast Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine.

Naomi Scott

Naomi Scott is a British-Indian actress most recently known for playing the Kimberley, the Pink Ranger in the Power Rangers movie and as she prepares to take on the role of Princess Jasmine the Internet has raised some concerns. Namely that she's not Arab.

Agrabah, the city featured in the animated film version of Aladdin is a fictional city but it has still been widely accepted that the movie takes place in the Middle East because the original setting of the 1992 classic was going to be Baghdad.

However, it's important to note that Disney was looking for more than heritage when it came to casting both Aladdin and Jasmine. The actor and actress chosen would need to be the appropriate age and be both musically inclined and able to dance on top of being a great actor.

And somehow the most controversy has been around their casting of Naomi as Jasmine but that's not the only character who isn't Arab...Click on the next page to learn more about the controversy.

In the live-action Aladdin movie set to begin filming August of 2017 Egyptian based actor Mena Massoud will be playing the part of Aladdin and British-Indian actress Naomi Scott will be playing Jasmine and more surprisingly, Will Smith as Genie. Will Smith in the past has had a lucrative career as a musician and dancer along with being a world-renowned actor but it's been a solid 10 years since he's put out an album of his own.

At the end of the day, though, Disney needs to have a little slack cut because they are actively trying to reduce white washing and promote cultural diversity and are currently on the hunt for a Chinese actress to play Mulan and we've heard nothing but good things about potential castings in The Lion King as well.

For now, here's all the dirt we need to evaluate for ourselves the best we can before the movie launches.
